Employers in the gold mining industry made an improved pay offer to trade unions on Tuesday, the Chamber of Mines of South Africa said.

It said the employers offered nine and 10 percent offers for Category 3 surface employees and eight percent for all other workers.

“In addition to the percentage wage increments offered, the employers made improved offers for surface and underground artisans in short supply,” the chamber said.

“This followed separate and parallel working groups to seek solutions ‘to do something special for certain categories of workers’.”

The employer had initially offered a new basic wage for rock drillers of R4 000 by July 2008, an increase in the living-out allowance from R1 000 per month to R1 200 by September 2008.
