Govt wants vibrant agric sector

KANYE – The government aims to develop the agricultural sector to make the country self-sufficient in food production, say President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama.

Speaking after touring crop farms at Mosi, Mmalore and Kanngwe last Friday, President Khama said they want a vibrant agricultural sector that will produce more so that we do not buy food from outside the country. Currently, the country imports about 80 per cent of its cereal requirements and 65 per cent of its horticultural requirements The President said his government came up with the ISPAAD programme to improve agriculture after realising that programmes such as ALDEP had shortcomings.

President Khama assured farmers that the government will continue to support them for increased food production. He, however, said government initiatives to develop the agricultural sector will not bear fruit if Batswana do not take advantage of them. I urge Batswana to take [continue reading]
