Government addresses merger problems

GABORONE – The Ministry of Local Government is working closely with that of defence, justice and security to address challenges that emerged after merging the Local Police and the Botswana Police Service.

Assistant Minister of Local Government, Mr Kentse Rammidi, told Parliament that, among other duties, the merger may have affected the administration of corporal punishment at customary courts.

He said, however, he was not aware that most customary courts were sending offenders deserving corporal punishment to already congested prisons or young offenders convicted of minor offences.
