Tour operators complain against illegal businesses

Botswana’s game parks are threatened by syndicates of phony operators who undertake illegal activities.

At a recent consultative local mobile safari tour operators complained to the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Kitso Mokaila, of tour operators from neighboring countries – especially South Africa and Namibia – undertaking unlicensed operations in Botswana game reserves and national parks.

They charged that these operators bring large numbers of tourists from their countries to enter Botswana under the pretext of being self- drive tourists, thus avoiding to pay the higher charges to enter the Moremi Game Reserve and the Chobe National Park.

A representative of HATAB, Adam Hedges, said the situation was serious; the syndicates have websites that openly show how to cheat Botswana parks.
