VAT up, no salary increment

GABORONE – There will be no salary increase and no inflation adjustment for civil servants during the 2010/2011 financial year.

The last time government increased salaries for employees was in April 2008 by 15 per cent following a salaries review commission, which also introduced scarce skills allowance and a recommendation by the National Employment, Manpower and Incomes Council whose mandate included advising government on remuneration of the public service.

In light of the fact that governments revenues have not yet recovered to pre-recession levels, while public sector employment is not contracting, government has accepted that there will be no cost of living adjustment during 2010/11 financial year, said finance minister, Mr Kenneth Matambo when presenting the budget speech yesterday.
