SA sends medics and rescuers to Haiti

Several South African rescue teams were departing to earthquake-devastated Haiti on Thursday night, authorities said.

The government said it was taking a three-phase approach to the rescue, while the city of Tshwane and the Gift of the Givers are embarking on similar missions.

“The immediate search and rescue phase in which search teams will be deployed to the Republic of Haiti… will include the deployment of medical professionals,” said Department of International Relations and Co-operation Deputy Minister Sue van der Merwe.

The government had partnered with the Department of Health, Vodacom, Netcare and Discovery to support the rescue teams.
