South Africa: Telkom moving into mobile space

Johannesburg – Telecommunications group Telkom is planning to spend up to R6bn to launch mobile operations in SA, which include rolling out its own network and establishing a roaming agreement with either Vodacom or MTN.

CEO Reuben September said on Tuesday the money will be spent over the next five years, using GSM technology (an ageing framework used for voice and basic data connectivity by cellular networks), along with newer data standards to ensure compatibility with other networks.
