Zimbabwe: ZANU PF loses parliamentary vote

HARARE – Zimbabwe’s main opposition has edged past the ruling ZANU PF party accumulating 96 seats, three more than the 93 held by President Robert Mugabe’s party according to the latest results.

A smaller opposition faction has picked up nine seats and an independent candidate has won a seat to bring the total number of seats in opposition hands to 106 – a figure ZANU PF cannot overturn even if it wins all the outstanding seven seats.

Zimbabwe’s House of Assembly has 210 seats, all elective. 206 seats were up for grabs after ZANU PF won one seat uncontested and elections for three other seats had to be postponed following the death of opposition candidates.
