A HIP-HOP diva is vying with the health minister of Botswana to play
Africa’s most famous fictional detective in a Hollywood film.Queen Latifah, the American rapper-cum-actress, is up against Professor
Sheila Tlou to land the
starring role of Precioushe founder of Botswana’s No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.The film, to be directed by Anthony Minghella, is based on the opening book of the bestselling series written by Alexander McCall Smith.However, just weeks before Minghella starts shooting in Botswana, the question of who will fill the comfortable shoes of the “traditionally built” Ramotswe is still unanswered. Casting agents are scouting Los Angeles, London and Johannesburg. Auditions held in Gaborone, Botswana, last month, to which overweight ladies were invited to apply, were mobbed.
