Modernise local government system

GABORONE – The local government system must be improved to meet current challenges and promote the efficient delivery of services, says local government permanent secretary, Mr Thatayaone Raphaka.

Officiating at a three-day workshop on decentralisation practices in four African countries in Gaborone on Monday, Mr Raphaka said the workshop was part of an initiative by Commonwealth heads of public service in Africa to create a platform for heads of public service to meet annually to share ideas and experiences in improving the performance of the public service in Commonwealth Africa.

The four countries which participated are Botswana, Cameroon, Mozambique and Tanzania.

Mr Raphaka said Botswana is committed to decentralisation persuaded by the arguments for efficiency and democracy.
