Private bill request raises mixed feelings

GABORONE – Parliament adjourned on Friday with the debate on Gaborone Central MP, Mr Dumelang Saleshandos motion still raging on.
The motion, requested the house in terms of Standing Orders 60 (2) to allow for the presentation of a private members bill amending the Local Government (District Councils) Act to abolish the system of nominated councillors.
MP for Kweneng South East, Mr Mmoloki Raletobana, noted that bringing the motion to Parliament was vital in the sense that MPs especially backbenchers should be seen to be assisting the executive in decision making and formulating legislation.
He advised the mover of the motion and other MPs to consult with relevant authorities, stakeholders and the local authority in a bid to promote and nurture the democratic principles. South East North MP, Mr Olebile Gaborone, told Parliament that there should be a clear line drawn between granting the mover of the motion permission to present the bill and discussing the content of the bill.
