Don`t run large deficit – Jefferies

Total foreign debt estimated at P12.13 billion
Economic consultant Keith Jefferies has said the ability by the country to borrow externally should not be a reason to run a large deficit.
In the 2009/10 Budget speech in Parliament the Minister of Finance and Development Planning Baledzi Gaolathe announced an “ambitious budget” that did not take into account the full effect of the current global crisis. The budget showed an increase in spending from last year and a budget deficit amounting to P13.4 billion.
Jefferies says as the country draws up the National Development Plan 10 (NDP 10- 2010-2016) it needs to come up with a sustainable budget that can be financed and should not run a large deficit just because it can borrow to finance the deficit.
