Mineral Production Steadies Against Recession

Recently released statistics from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) indicate that with the exception of diamonds, mineral production around the country is resisting the global economic downturn.

According to a Stats Update, copper nickel matte production (as produced by BCL Mine in Selebi-Phikwe) between January and March this year was pegged at 10 199 tonnes, compares to 14 331 tonnes produced over the same period last year. Following this robust first quarter production, BCL Mine went on to produce 52 086 tonnes of copper nickel matte last year. This year, it is expected that the Mine will produce somewhere below its 2007 figure of 49 121 tonnes.
