Corruption makes SA passport `unsafe`

Pretoria – Corruption within the home affairs department has rendered South African identity documents suspect amongst the international community, Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said on Monday.

“We can no longer be sure whether the person in possession of a South African passport is 100% South African,” she told journalists at the National Press Club in Pretoria.

She said regardless of the new security features in the new passports, some countries still demanded a visa because a South African passport was not secure enough.

“We have a lot to clean up in our population register.”

Minimising late birth registration

As part of the clean-up campaign, she said there was a need to minimise late birth registration.

The Department of Home Affairs has done so much within the last 18 months to improve on the security features of the passports and id, which makes it very difficult for criminal syndicates to fake this documents as the now verify every application of the passport and id online before it could be captured. And the document (passport and id) as well has security features that cannot be faked.

    We should really salute the Government’s effort in the improvement they have introduced so far, we hope the international community is taking note.
