It is important to highlight these events as they were geared to underscore the centrality of freedom of expression in the life of our democracy.
Perhaps more than ever before the event brought together journalists, media workers and other champions of the right to freedom of expression across the civil service. Many came because they felt what they had always taken for granted is now under serious threat. Others came so that they could help plant the seed of activism against this new wave of repression that is emerging in our beloved country.
The marches and the many speeches that were delivered from the Press Conference up to the final day on Saturday was that people are overly concerned about the repressive law that is the Media Practitioners Act. Most said this law is unjust and it calls to be challenged not only from the court of law but through many other avenues including civil disobedience.
