Tourism Numbers Down By 19%

Tourism recorded an estimated 19 percent drop in bookings in comparison to the same time last year as tourists tighten their purse strings becuase of the deepening global economic and financial crisis.
“Nobody is going to be left unscathed,” the CEO of the Botswana Tourism Board (BOTOBO), Myra Sekgororoane, said at a press conference last Thursday.
“The booking lead time has shortened, bringing a certain amount of uncertainty in future business,” Sekgororoane said.
She said some facilities had also recorded cancellations that she described as “insignificant”. But despite the 19 percent drop in arrivals, she said Botswana had not been severely affected due to the traditionally long booking lead time.
