South Africa: Beware of bank account scam

A new scam being circulated has caught out a number of locals.

A Cape Times reader from L’Agulhas was overjoyed when he received the following SMS last Monday morning: “Congratulations!!! You’ve won the sum of R1,2-million. Your number was among the lucky winning numbers drawn at random in the UK Telco Bonanza. Ticket No. Uk368za. Contact Samantha Williams on 079 400 7187 to claim your winning prize. Please protect your ticket PIN code for security reasons. www.uk-telco.co.uk.”

He visited the UK Telco website and felt it “looked real”, although there was no mention of any competition.

At first he and his wife were sceptical and thought it was a scam.

But, after contacting Williams, they were reassured the SMS was legitimate.
