World football authority Fifa is looking for around 5 000 local residents to apply for the unique opportunity to be volunteers in various capacities during the 2009 Confederations Cup, also to be held in South Africa.
Billed as the “festival of champions”, the Confederations Cup features the champions of the six Fifa confederations, as well as the defending World Cup champions Italy and future hosts South Africa, a statement this week by the 2010 Local Organising Committee (LOC) says.
European champions Spain, South American champions Brazil, North American and Caribbean champions the United States of America, Asian Champions Iraq and African champions Egypt have qualified to date.
It takes place between 14 and 28 June 2009, with matches being hosted in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Rustenburg, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth.
