SMS bullying poses headache for police

Cellular phone bullying could become a big headache for Botswana’s law enforcement agencies as police have been receiving frequent reports of unsavoury SMSs from offended parties.

The SMS fights usually break out amongst women in which all sorts of obscenities are traded.

The police say that they see an increase in such cases, where people arrive huffing and puffing to complain that someone they cannot identify is calling their phone and harassing them or sending them inappropriate text messages.

Francistown Police Station Commander Superintendent Mokuedi Mphathi confirmed receiving such cases almost daily.

“We have a lot of cases like that. They are being reported here on almost a daily basis. It is just that usually people who come to the police station hope that the police will go to Mascom or Orange and have the number of the culprit released. But that it is not an easy process.
