KAMPALA – Botswana and Canada are looking into ways to further strengthen bilateral relations and explore more areas of trade and cooperation.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr Charles Ntwaagae said in an interview that President Festus Mogae met Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting on Saturday to touch base on a number of issues.
The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including collaboration in mining.
Mr Ntwaagae said Botswanas economy is propelled by mining, in particular diamonds, so it is fitting to work with Canada as the country is a giant in the industry.
Also the permanent secretary said both countries are party to the Kimberly Process meant to ensure that illegal gems termed conflict diamonds do not enter the market.
